Gavin Burnett

Having trained at Edinburgh College of Art and left with a BA(Hons) in Applied Arts, Gavin has continued to work in the ceramic industry, including ceramic and glass specialist in schools and art colleges as well as continuing as a practising artist.

Porcelain is a challenging material to work with but its unique qualities as a clay body has driven Gavin to investigate its wide potential through slip casting, hand building and throwing.

Fascinated by process and enhancing a technique, Gavin has explored the traditional glass cutting technique ‘battuto’ to create a highly textured, tactile surface on porcelain forms. This cutting technique allows him to exploit the materials translucent nature seeing the interior colour illuminating the exterior. Working intensively and methodically, absorbing the processes through production.

The faceted flowing forms are individually created though an almost intuitive mark making.

The forms Gavin creates are another important element of his work. He is naturally drawn to designing of objects that have a function. Gavin enjoys the relationship with user and object.

More recently, Gavin has been exploring multi-layered slip casting to create work. He is starting to blur the boundaries between the usable and the decorative by creating more individual pieces and collections.

Clive Maddison

The inspiration for my wire tree sculptures came at a paper cutting artist’s exhibition at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen in Bovey Tracey, South Devon. What the artist had made in paper, I thought I could make in wire. Once I had made a couple of trees, I was asked to create a sculpture for a Christmas present. Another request was made not long after and that encouraged me to contact a gallery. I regularly holiday in the Lake District and knew of the Lee Chapman Gallery in Keswick where I had recently visited. They immediately ordered eight trees, two of which sold within two weeks.

Sometime later I posted some pictures of my tree sculptures on an art website. One morning there were numerous messages congratulating me on my art which had, unbeknown to me, been featured on the main page. Following that I was contacted by several galleries wanting to display my work. I also received many requests from people, across the globe, enquiring about commissioning a sculpture. I started making wire trees for my own enjoyment and it has turned into something much more. I still enjoy making them as much as ever and take great pleasure knowing each piece is unique and individual.

Studio Roof

Imagination is always the motive behind our collection. We believe that imagination is not bound by age. Our products are creations for all ages, inviting you to tell stories to each other, to inspire and to be inspired.

Together with our three children we started Studio ROOF in 2005. Our inspiration lies in the beauty of childhood, the imagination, nature, peoples of the world, art and craftsmanship, and our drive has above all been the urge to create, and to unfold new imagery.

All my work draws inspiration from the sea, and each piece has its own story to tell.

When I produce a piece it becomes a narrative, the tale of a journey. Objects discovered on the shoreline find themselves becoming part of the story. I use a variety of decoration techniques as my ideas continue to flow and move on to create different avenues and new approaches. Ships, boats, and wrecks are the main fabric of the work, made from clay that has the textures of metal and wood objects salvaged, press moulded, and patched together to produce a variety of forms that look as though they have sailed the Seven Seas.

Inspiration for my work almost always comes from nature. How can you fail to be bowled over by a perfect shell or the colours in a butterfly’s wing? This is my starting point. I’m an avid collector of stuff; my pockets always bulging after a walk on the beach. I draw to gain a better understanding of my finds. By examining them carefully I can see the way they have grown or been formed. Sometimes by doing this I discover patterns or shapes that at first glance are not obvious.

My ceramics are decorated using the technique of sgraffito. The clay body of the piece is coated in a contrasting coloured layer of clay which I then scratch through to reveal the clay body beneath. I’m essentially drawing into the clay but time and accuracy are crucial as with sgraffito one slip could ruin the piece. My drawing process gives me the opportunity to simplify the images I use on my pots; I start to see them as a decorative collection of patterns and shapes rather than an accurate representation of the original.

Candle Bothy

Nothing can beat the cosy light of a flickering candle and paired with your favourite scent it makes for pure relaxation.

After making candles as a hobby, for family and friends and for charity events, I developed a passion for candle making. I am always striving to make simple, natural, long-lasting candles that burn clean and scent a room with vibrant fragrances. I love to combine natural waxes with fine fragrance oils that will give you hours of shimmering light, a lovely scent and a stunning looking candle that will fit any home.

I want my products to be of the highest quality and long-lasting yet affordable. The simple carton packaging protects the products and is ideal for gifts.
